Which is a better career option ,is it SAP Technical or SAP Functional ?
Well, If you want your career to be stressful and want more Onsite opportunities then you should land in Functional area, having said that even SAP Technical (ABAP) will have onsite opportunities but will be less compared to functional and onsite duration for technical folks will be less (considering average).
SAP technical you have only ABAP, where as Functional you got so many modules ( ex: MM,SD,HR,FICO etc ).
SAP Functional:
You need hell of domain knowledge to excel as functional guy , let say you have worked on sales & marketing for couple of years then you will find SAP SD part easy. You also need very good communications skills, why ?? You will quite often need to interact with client, like gathering the requirements and updating the work done so far and so on.
SAP Technical:
Well, If you are interested in coding a lot, you will find this part fun and challenging, you also need to have modest functional knowledge to excel in this area.Your role to take the requirements from the lead and also from functional, here Functional guy will tell you the design and front end stuff to you to code.finally,you will find coding boring after working for 5+ years then you feel I should just into functional area.
Saying: I am a coder, I have no life J.
Techno-Functional : If you have worked on sap technical and while working on it ,may will interact with
Functional guy and then you will get both Technical(which you already have) and functional, then you
Are simply a Techno Functional guy, demand for this role is quite high, you can make more bucks with this kind of job.
Which is more stress full ?
I would say functional, because the requirements which client tell you are unique to every business ,so if you make the mistake and proceed further then you are in deep trouble. When comes to SAP Technical guy if you don’t know certain things you got the license to Google it and solve your things. If you make a mistake, you can simply edit the code and you are done, taking further you also got the tester you will test your things and will get back to you in case if you have done incorrectly !
Disadvantages with being a SAP ABAP guy : You need to learn this area entire your career because daily new things will come into picture. You need to update yourself all the time even after working for long years ,say 10 years, you still need to register for a new course and learn that’s how new technical part works.
